The Massachusetts Geographic Alliance (MGA) is a grassroots organization of hundreds of teachers and is dedicated to improving geography education in the Commonwealth. It is one of 50 state geography alliances affiliated with the National Geographic Society. (National Geographic Educational Foundation)
The MGA sponsors conferences, workshops, summer institutes, geography fairs and Geography Awareness Week activities in the state.
The Alliance disseminates geography teaching material and organizes the Massachusetts part of the National Geographic's Geography Bee.
Many of MGA's activities are conducted through its regional geographic centers affiliated institutions based at Bridgewater State University, Elms College, Framingham State University, and Salem State University. The MGA also coordinates education efforts with the Massachusetts Global Education Consortium and others in promoting geography education.
The work of the Alliance is coordinated by Arlene Kowal of Elms College and Vernon Domingo of Bridgewater State University. The work of the coordinators is supported by the Steering Committee.
