Teaching About Saudi Arabia
This three-hour workshop is designed for middle school geography teachers and any teacher who like to learn more about this region of the world. The session will begin with an introductory lecture on Islam in Saudi Arabia. The second part of the session will feature an educator who recently participated in an educator’s study tour to Saudi Arabia. She will share her observations, ideas for teaching about Saudi Arabia, and information on how to apply for a study tour.

Islam in Southeast Asia
This seminar will be built around the Asia Society’s curricula Interweaving Cultures: Islam in Southeast Asia. Participants will receive a copy of the curricula, handouts and a $250 stipend upon completion of an acceptable implementation plan. The target audience for this series is world history teachers and middle school geography teachers.

India On The Rise
This two-part program present several entry points for teaching abut this complex country. Presenters will include content specialists and teachers. Jean Johnson, editor of Through Indian Eyes, will be the featured presenter on March 7th. Todd Lewis will be the featured presenter on March 31st. All teachers will receive handouts and teaching materials, including a copy of Through Indian Eyes and material from the Newsweek Education Program.

Fulbright Study Tour for Teachers: Egypt and Tanzania:
Contemporary Islam and Muslim Communities
June 30-July 29, 2009 (Pending Fulbright funding notification in late winter. Until then,
the tour is likely but not definite.)
Cost: $1,300
Eligibility: K-12 educators from Ma, RI. and CT. who teach about
Islam, Muslim communities, world history, world literature and the
arts. Library media specialists are welcome. Open only to U.S. citizens
and permanent residents who have taught for 3 yrs.
Deadline: postmarked by Friday, February 20th. Decision: by Friday, March 6th.

invite you to apply for the 2009 GEM Grants. The Longview
Foundation has offered GEM and Primary Source funding for mini-grants to
facilitate planning and execution of effective and replicable models of best
practices in international education in Massachusetts schools. The grants
encourage districts to create concrete initiatives worthy of statewide and

further mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese. The award is
presented annually to two pre-college teachers in two categories, humanities and

The NCSS Teacher of the Year Awards recognize exceptional classroom social
studies teachers for grades K-6, 5-8, and 7-12 who teach social studies
regularly and systematically in elementary school settings, and at least
half-time in middle or junior high and high school settings. Award winners
receive $2,500, complimentary one-year membership in NCSS, and present a session
on their work at the NCSS Annual Conference, and up to $500 in
