World Regional Geography

A DAY IN THE LIFE IN AFRICA

A workshop series for Grades 6-7 Teachers and others

at the Global Studies Center, Winchester Public Schools  --   Saturdays, March 20 & April 10, 2010

9:15am-12:15pm

Africa is a large, diverse and complex continent. Teaching about it can be overwhelming, especially with limited time and resources to adequately cover the area.  The first 2 parts of this 3-part workshop series will provide teachers with a mix of content information and hands-on activities for teaching about selected regions of the continent. Each session will address the question: What is daily life like in this region today?

Session #1: Saturday March 20, Daily Life in Southern Africa, presented by Vernon Domingo, geography professor, Bridgewater State College, born & raised in South Africa, co-coordinator, Massachusetts Geography Alliance.

Session # 2: Saturday, April 10, Daily Life in East Africa, presented by Erika Guckenburger,  geography teacher, McCall Middle School, Winchester, participant in Fulbright East Africa program, and Paul Mulloy, co-coordinator, Massachusetts Geography Alliance ( ret.), author of “Activities for Teaching the 5 Themes of Geography”.

There is no charge for these programs. Other benefits include:

* A $50 stipend for the first 20 teachers who register & attend both sessions.

* A certificate of completion for 5 PDP’s for each session (upon completion of a very brief

activity guide related to the workshop theme).

* A complimentary packet of theme-related resource materials.
